All-Natural Cough Remedies for Children! {Giveaway, Too!}

It’s that time of year again. I can’t tell you how many people I know whose children are down with one virus or another, and the endless cycle just keeps going. No matter what precautions you take, doubtless someone in your family is going to get sick at some point this winter, so it’s a good idea to be prepared with a well-stocked medicine cabinet.

But when I say “medicine”, what I really mean are tried-and-true safe remedies that are both effective and harmless, that treat the illness itself and not merely the symptoms. I find that my growing arsenal of herbal and otherwise natural remedies more often than not work just as well (and even better!) than the conventional medicines you can buy over the counter. Consequently, I have bought fewer and fewer of said OTC meds over the course of the past few years.

However, I am not one to forage for herbs in my back yard (since I have no back yard), and I’m also not all that keen on mixing up my own tinctures and oils when my little ones get sick. No, thank you. I like to keep things simple, so I prefer to have a ready-made remedy… well, ready. And already made.

Thankfully, there are more and more such options available for lazy people like me (and some of you I’m sure - certainly I can’t be the only one not that interested in making my own elderberry syrup). One such option is Maty’s line of products.

Maty’s all-natural remedies were developed by the parents of a little girl named Maty who was born with serious heart defects. They were determined to treat their daughter’s various ailments with all natural products and remedies, and over the course of time, developed the 5 products they currently carry: children’s chest rub, adult’s chest rub, children’s cough syrup, adult cough syrup, and nasal ointment.

I had the opportunity to try out their baby chest rub on Tiger Cub, who developed a cold shortly after I received the product (of course!). One night, he woke up coughing, and I immediately thought to apply the baby vapor rub to his chest and his feet to give him some relief and help him get back to sleep. Frankly, I was mildly skeptical because I had only limited success using Vick’s vapor rub in the same way in the past. I was pleasantly surprised to find that after coughing once or twice more, he settled down and went right back to sleep. He did not cough again the rest of the night. The next night, I rubbed the vapor rub into his chest and feet again before sending him to bed, and it lasted most of the night. When he woke up coughing, I re-applied it, and once again, he slept peacefully for the remainder of the night.

What I love most is the ingredient list:

  • sunflower oil
  • coconut oil
  • candellila wax
  • castor oil
  • shea butter
  • vitamin E
  • chamomile essential oil
  • dill weed essential oil
  • lavender essential oil
  • eucalyptus essential oil
  • patchouli essential oil
  • coriander essential oil.

There’s nothing in there I wouldn’t put myself if I were into making natural remedies for coughs. I’m so glad this product exists because it means I don’t have to go collect all those ingredients and figure out how to turn them into a vapor rub - it’s already done for me!

To sum up, Maty’s Baby Chest Rub is

  • Effective
  • Natural
  • Safe
  • Easy to use.

Let’s see. Authentic. Simple.

Yep. I officially love it.

You have the opportunity to win one of Maty’s products for yourself! Simply enter the contest via the Rafflecopter below for your choice of one Maty’s product. The contest is only valid in the United States, and ends next Tuesday, January 15, at midnight.

Get a Healthy Gut

One goal I have for 2013 is to increase my consumption of probiotics. So far, yogurt and sourdough are my main sources of probiotics, and I would really like to add some additional probiotic-rich foods, particularly drinks and fermented vegetables (provided I can find some I like!).

If including more probiotics into your diet is one of your new year’s goals, too, you might be interested in a new product I discovered last year. It’s called “CocoKefir” and it’s a probiotic drink made from young coconut water. It’s tangy with a hint of sweetness, and will help keep your digestive system running smoothly.

Unlike the bottles of kefir you see in the grocery store, this particular kefir is completely dairy-free, which is great if you are trying to avoid dairy products for any reason. That is in fact why I was particularly interested in sampling it myself, because my Certain Little Someone cannot have dairy-based probiotics and that has proven to be a tricky proposition.

My Certain Little Someone was not too fond of drinking the CocoKefir straight up, but he didn’t even notice when I mixed it into his smoothies (any flavor), or otherwise stirred it into his food. I found it a simple way to sneak some more probiotics into his diet - and you know how I feel about keeping things simple!

We also tried another product by the same company, called CocoYo. It’s a yogurt-type food, but it’s made from the actual coconut meat, not coconut milk. As such, it is a rich, thick, and smooth yogurt that my Certain Little Someone did enjoy eating straight up whenever I gave it to him.

Tula’s CocoKefir products are pricey - almost $10 for each container. But if you’re looking for a high-quality dairy-free probiotic-rich food that you don’t have to make yourself (which can be a time-consuming and sometimes frustrating process!), I highly recommend it. I think if you can afford it, the product is definitely worth every penny of the price.

You can order CocoKefir online or check out their retail locations to see if a store near you carries them. Visit Tula’s CocoKefir website for more information.

Make Gift-Giving Easier: Buy Gifts on a Theme

This is a tip I grew up on, y’all. My mom is a total master at this little trick! I guess when you have 11 kids, you learn ways to simplify life (and Christmas and birthdays) like this.

Here’s the tip: buy everybody on your list the same thing. OK, almost the same thing. You don’t want to give your 5-year-old niece and your 40-year-old bachelor cousin the same exact thing. You can tweak each individual gift to fit the person, but really, you’re buying everybody the same thing.

For example…

Theme Gift Ideas

  • DVD’s - Everybody loves a good movie, right? And you can easily buy the lastest princess movie for your 5-year-old niece, and the most recent blockbuster shoot-em-up for your bachelor cousin, thus satisfying the needs of individuality and simplification in one fell swoop.
  • Books - Ebooks, hardbacks, paperbacks, doesn’t matter. That’s up to you. But I can promise you this: there is a book out there that is perfect for every single person on your list. Guaranteed.
  • CD’s/MP3′s - Granted, this one is a little trickier, because people’s music tastes and preferences can be so varied and so very personal. But don’t sweat it! If you give Amazon MP3′s as a gift, the recipient can easily swap it out for different music they prefer.
  • Food - Everybody has to eat. That’s an inescapable fact of life. And if it’s an indulgent sort of edible, they are not likely to complain. Think along the lines of universal favorites, like pizza, pasta, chocolate, and coffee. Or go with gourmet coffees and teas. Another popular idea this time of year is gourmet popcorn or candies. Buy small portions of gourmet goodies and package them up with inexpensive dishware or kitchen gadgets that you find at discount stores, thrift stores, or online.
  • Photographs - Shutterfly has TONS of gift ideas in every price range so you can find a little somethin’ for everybody on your list.
  • Clothes - Now, I don’t actually recommend this one unless you’re desperate, because not everybody likes to get clothes for gifts, especially if the gift-er is not particularly in tune with their own personal sense of style. But you can adapt this particular category by choosing specific elements of clothing for different segments of your gift-giving list: scarves for all the ladies, ties for all the guys, dresses for the little girls, and character t-shirts for the boys.
  • Jewelry - You might not be able to give all the guys on your list jewelry, but chances are, every single female you know would love to receive a little bauble, even if it is only costume jewelry. Earrings are a popular wish list item in my family and extended family, all the way from the tots to the… well… not-so-tots. (I don’t want to say their age cuz they might be reading. I have to see them at Christmastime, ya know!)
  • Pets - Just kidding. Don’t you dare, unless you want to be blacklisted from every family gathering from now until 2065.

Generic and Highly Customizable At the Same Time

What I love about this concept is that it makes gift-giving so very simple, but it doesn’t take away the loving thought that goes into giving a good gift. Just because you’re giving everyone the same thing doesn’t mean you haven’t take into consideration each person’s individual personality, hobby, dreams and desires. It just means you’re a smart person who knows how to simplify your life without losing authenticity in the process.

And not only can you customize these gift themes according to individuals and families, you can customize them by price as well! Books come in every shape, size, topic, and price, so you can spend more on your hubby’s book (or set of books - I got mine this set of Calvin and Hobbes books one year) and less on your second cousin three times removed.

How do you simplify the gift-giving and buying process?

Get Personalized Gift Ideas for Those Hard-to-Buy-For People

Christmas Gift List
We all have those people on our list - the people whose wish list is either nonexistent or full of very expensive toys. We wrack our brains trying to come up with an affordable but desirable gift idea, and end up resorting to gift cards (Not that there’s anything wrong with gift cards, really. They just don’t show how much evidence of thought and care being put into the gift).

I have a great idea for you that will solve your gift-giving blues. It’s such a simple but effective tip, you’re going to smack your head and say, “Duh! Why didn’t I think of that?”.

Here’s a great gift-giving idea for hard to buy for people:

Browse the Pinterest and/or Facebook profile of the person you are having trouble gifting. Look for interests, hobbies, and even specific items they want and/or need.

Because you know, if you just asked the person outright what they want for Christmas, you will more than likely get a shrug of the shoulders and an “I don’t know!”. At least that’s my experience. But if you do a little modern-day spying, you can get some great fool-proof ideas for the best gift ever.

Here are some tips to guide your social media spy mission:

  • Look for fan pages of musicians, movies, and TV shows they have “liked” on Facebook. Chances are, they probably already own the music, TV show, or movie in question, but you can purchase them some fan paraphernalia. Or, just buy them the digital version on Amazon and have it sent to them on Christmas Day. If they already do own it, they can do a virtual exchange to get something they want but don’t have instead.
  • Do the same with sports teams. Find out which college or pro team they love, and gift accordingly. Clothing will always be well accepted (think t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, etc.), as would tickets to a game!
  • Is your friend crafty? Do they pin scrapbooking or knitting ideas like crazy? Buy them tools for the trade! Put together a package of scrapbooking accessories, or yarn and crochet needles, or a glue gun with lots of glue sticks. Once you’ve identified a favorite craft they enjoy, a walk through Michaels’, Joanns, or Hobby Lobby will yield more gift-giving ideas than you can imagine.
  • Notice recipe trends on Pinterest boards. Does your friend pin lots of Italian recipes? Or baking? Or quick and easy meals? Think of cookbooks they might enjoy along those lines. You could even build a basket of ingredients to make one of the meals or dishes they pinned. This is particularly useful if it’s a special recipe with expensive ingredients they might not buy as part of their normal grocery budget.
  • Identify hobbies and pastimes. Aside from crafting, many people enjoy pastimes like reading, or listening to music, or watching TV shows. Once you’ve figured out their particular pastime, you can come up with lots of great gift ideas to go with them. Find favorite authors and purchase their books. A subscription to streaming Netflix would be another great idea! Did you know you could gift Redbox codes, which are good for TV show, movie, and video game rentals?
  • Check out their sense of style. If your friend posts lots of fashion ideas on Pinterest, that can give you some great guidance as you browse through clothing racks. Clothing is hard to buy for someone other than yourself, but armed with their own personal fashion guide they created themselves, it’s easier to get it right.
  • What kind of fragrances do they enjoy? Candles, personal toiletries, and perfumes all come in a variety of fragrances, and with a little bit of sharp sleuthing, you can figure out what sorts of smells your friend might like. They may not come out and say, “I love this smell”, but you can look for postings about favorite flowers, favorite drinks and foods, and other indicators.
  • Find their favorite colors. A quick skim through a few different Pinterest boards will help you figure this out.
  • What sparks their passion? What topics do they post frequently about? Politics? Religion? Natural living? Child-rearing? Think of books, movies, and events that correlate to those and buy along those interests.

And if all else fails, buy them a gift card.

How do you buy something for that hard-to-gift person?

Three Easy Ways to Give Back this Christmas

After the gratefulness of Thanksgiving comes a flurry of commercialism and materialism: Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday. I like to shop with the best of them, and I always have fun with my family browsing the good deals on Black Friday, but it’s nice to have a day to turn our attention back to our blessings and those who are less fortunate. (And no matter how dire our circumstances, there is always someone less fortunate than us.)

In celebration of the spirit of Generous Tuesday, I bring to you 3 very easy ways to give back.

1. Pure Charity

Generous Tuesday was actually launched by Pure Charity, an organization that exists specifically to help connect givers and recipients, and not only during the holiday season. Simply create a virtual “account” on their website, then shop through their portal. The benefit to you is that you will receive special personalized deals from retailers you already shop at like Target, Groupon, Walmart and more. A percentage of your purchase is deposited into your account (otherwise known as your giving fund) and when you reach your goal amount, you can choose a charity of your choice to receive the funds! It’s a great way to finish your Christmas shopping and give generously at the same time.

2. Samaritan’s Purse

It’s too late to get in on the action of Operation Christmas Child (but you should really put it on your list for next year if you haven’t already), but Samaritans Purse, the organization behind the Christmas shoeboxes, has a lot more giving opportunities you might not be aware of.

For example, you can:

  • Feed a child in Mongolia for an entire week for $7.
  • Provide school supplies or tuition for a month for a child in a needy country for $15.
  • Supply an entire outfit complete with shoes and coat for $25.
  • Sponsor an orphan, providing their food, healthcare, shelter, education and other essentials for a month for $35.
  • Stock a fish pond for a community for $50.
  • Supply a dairy goat to a family in need for $70.
  • Provide a water filter that will provide a family with a lifetime of healthy water for $100.

Even the poorest of us here in the United States of America have so much more than the majority of people worldwide, and I love that Samaritan’s Purse makes it easy for us to give to those who have need of our generosity. They have many more options besides these, plus you can choose to split larger gifts with other people.

3. Angel Tree

Angel Tree takes the time to reach a forgotten segment of society - the children of prisoners. Parents in prison can sign their children up to receive gifts at Christmas. In turn, churches and other organizations set up Christmas trees with angel tags on them. Each angel tag bears the name of a prisoner’s child and the gift they might like to receive. Anyone interested in participating chooses a tag and purchases a $20 gift for the child, wraps it, and drops it off with the Angel Tree coordinator. Angel Tree takes care of delivering the gifts to the intended recipients.

You can participate with Angel Tree in a variety of ways:

  • Organize an Angel Tree in your church or Christian organization.
  • Contact Angel Tree at angel_tree (at) pfm.org to find organizations or churches with Angel Tree programs already existing in your area, and give a gift to a prisoner’s child.
  • Donate online.

Is There Such a Thing as Affordable Essential Oils?

Everyday Oils1 Why Essential Oils?

I am thankful that my mom raised me to be wary of conventional medicine: she wasn’t afraid to use it when necessary, but she much preferred to treat our common childhood ailments with her well-stocked arsenal of home remedies and basic natural treatments, only trotting us off to the doctor when absolutely necessary. I recall phases where she gave us all garlic supplements to ward off colds and flu, which were apparently running rampant at the time. And I recall one instance when she tried to make us all drink carrot garlic juice in an effort to rid our family of some respiratory illnesses that were plaguing us for months (thankfully, since I had finally personally recovered from the flu myself, I got a pass on that particular treatment).

This wariness of conventional medicine, and this leaning towards natural remedies followed me into my adulthood, where I kind of floundered for a while in a rather nebulous state of healthcare. I wasn’t interested in either embracing or outright refusing regular medical care (i.e., medical doctors), but I wasn’t sure what - if any - of the seemingly endless natural care options was the most effective. Some things in the natural medicine world struck me as being downright odd and even a little freaky, frankly. But I wasn’t willing to succumb to Tylenol and antibiotics for every little ache or illness, either. So I really didn’t do anything but the most basic of natural remedies, resorting to visits to the Urgent Care when I couldn’t recover from an illness on my own.

Then I had kids. To be specific, I had kids with health issues like food allergies, asthma, and eczema. I was happy for conventional medical care that helped me and my Certain Little Someone through the terrible first year or two of his life, when we struggled with multiple allergic episodes, wheezing, and itchy itchy eczema that kept him (and me!) up all night. There was a time when I was simply trying to stay afloat, and frankly, trying to keep my child alive and my sanity intact at the same time. I didn’t care what it took, I just wanted my child to live and breathe without scratching his skin off.

But things settled down, and I began to consider more seriously the different options available for treating his various conditions. That’s when I learned about chiropractic care for allergy & asthma patients, and began taking him to get regular adjustments. One of these days, I’ll tell you more about my experience in that realm, but for now, let’s just say it was the first step on my journey towards intentional natural healing. It’s one thing to merely avoid medical care unless absolutely necessary; it’s another thing to seek out alternatives.

As I began to research alternatives to conventional medical care, I began to seriously consider for the first time exactly what I wanted that to look like. I wanted any remedies I employed to work with the body’s natural processes and not against them. I wanted options that nourished and healed without delivering unwanted - and unhelpful - side effects. I wanted care that was holistic in the sense that it took into consideration the involvement of mind and spirit in the body’s healing, but did not dismiss the One Who created the body. I also wanted options that would be easy for me to use in my own home and did not necessarily require the oversight of a doctor (although I am very interested in working with a naturopath or herbalist when the occasion warrants). And of course, I wanted reliable remedies that actually worked!

Not Exactly Affordable

Over and over again, the option that continually represented itself as meeting all these qualifications was… essential oils. Easy to use, effective, no side effects, holistic… and expensive! I admit to getting frustrated by the fact that I could not afford any oils except the occasional bottle from the health food store. And I never felt comfortable actually using those oils on or in my body, so I mostly employed them as cleaning agents around the house.

I knew that high quality essential oils would be the most effective - and the safest - to use, but I was discouraged by the fact that I could barely afford the health-store variety, let alone the incredibly expensive high-quality brands. Of course, I understood there was a reason for their high cost - you get what you pay for, after all! This is one of those things where the extra investment is definitely worth it. But if you don’t have the money, you don’t have the money. I wasn’t about to go into debt to purchase essential oils!

Or Maybe… There IS Such a Thing as Affordable Essential Oils!

And then, in one of those divinely ordained encounters, I learned from Jodi of Granola Mom 4 God and Naturally His that becoming a distributor of Young Living Essential Oils was easy to do, and, what’s better, made them considerably more affordable! I had considered it off and on prior to our conversation, but never pursued it, thinking it would require too much investment of both time and money to make it worthwhile. When Jodi told me the only monetary requirement for keeping your distributor account active was $50 a year… I was sold! I can handle $50 a year! And I can invest as much or as little time into it as I am able to afford, which of course will change with the changing seasons of my life.

So I am now officially an independent distributor of Young Living Essential Oils, which enables me to purchase their oils at wholesale prices! I have already used up a couple of the bottles from my starter kit, and just the other day made my very first order. I am so excited to be able to afford these oils for the benefit of my family and their health.

I’ve been using my oils like crazy the past month or so:

  • putting a drop or two of Thieves oil in the humidifier in The Boys’ room to help ward off sickness during the cold and flu season
  • rubbing peppermint oil (diluted in jojoba oil) on their chests and backs and feet when they had a cold
  • rubbing diluted Thieves oil onto the soles of their feet to help keep their immune system strong against sickness when we go out
  • adding lemon oil to the dishwasher for sparkling clean dishes
  • adding lemon oil to the washer to help keep linens clean and white
  • rubbing PanAway on Tiger Cub’s big toe after he dropped a pumpkin on it (OUCH!)
  • … and lots more!

I’m still exploring and learning all about the possibilities, and I can’t wait to share what I learn with you!

How You Can Afford Essential Oils

And now, let me be perfectly frank with you for just a second. (OK, I’m always frank, but whatever.) I know from speaking with many of you that you don’t have a lot of spare cash hanging around either. That’s one reason why you follow my blog in the first place, because misery loves company, err… I mean… birds of a feather flock together. We are all in this frugal boat together, learning how to make do with what we’ve been given, even if it isn’t much.

And since I know that many of you are like me, you don’t have any interest in spending what seems to be excessive amounts of money on little bottles of oils that you’re not even sure will work for their intended purpose. I understand, because I’m the same way. And that’s why I’m so excited to tell you about the possibilities of becoming an independent distributor of Young Living Essential Oils - it can make something valuable and financially unattainable become a reality for you.

An independent distributor of YLEO (I’m sort of tired of typing all that out, so let’s just go with the acronym, shall we?), you would be able to:

  • purchase the oils at the wholesale price
  • sell the oils (potentially, you could cover the costs for your own oils by the sales you make!)
  • get significantly discounted shipping and pricing by enrolling in Essential Rewards (a monthly auto-ship program)
  • earn credits towards purchases via the Essential Rewards program
  • earn commissions and bonuses depending on your sales and other factors

Your initial investment to get started as a distributor of YLEO can be as little as $40, which, in my opinion, is a great deal and very affordable for most people. That will get you started with the two most popular oils with very broad applications - lavender and peppermint, plus it will provide you with all the information you need to start using YLEO.

If you are interested, you can check out my YLEO website for more information, or contact me here.
