One goal I have for 2013 is to increase my consumption of probiotics. So far, yogurt and sourdough are my main sources of probiotics, and I would really like to add some additional probiotic-rich foods, particularly drinks and fermented vegetables (provided I can find some I like!).
If including more probiotics into your diet is one of your new year’s goals, too, you might be interested in a new product I discovered last year. It’s called “CocoKefir” and it’s a probiotic drink made from young coconut water. It’s tangy with a hint of sweetness, and will help keep your digestive system running smoothly.
Unlike the bottles of kefir you see in the grocery store, this particular kefir is completely dairy-free, which is great if you are trying to avoid dairy products for any reason. That is in fact why I was particularly interested in sampling it myself, because my Certain Little Someone cannot have dairy-based probiotics and that has proven to be a tricky proposition.
My Certain Little Someone was not too fond of drinking the CocoKefir straight up, but he didn’t even notice when I mixed it into his smoothies (any flavor), or otherwise stirred it into his food. I found it a simple way to sneak some more probiotics into his diet – and you know how I feel about keeping things simple!
We also tried another product by the same company, called CocoYo. It’s a yogurt-type food, but it’s made from the actual coconut meat, not coconut milk. As such, it is a rich, thick, and smooth yogurt that my Certain Little Someone did enjoy eating straight up whenever I gave it to him.
Tula’s CocoKefir products are pricey – almost $10 for each container. But if you’re looking for a high-quality dairy-free probiotic-rich food that you don’t have to make yourself (which can be a time-consuming and sometimes frustrating process!), I highly recommend it. I think if you can afford it, the product is definitely worth every penny of the price.
